Beach Boutiques

Where to buy your winter sun wardrobe

Jetting off to a sunny climate for a beach holiday is a great cure for the winter blues. But at this time of year, where do you begin looking for summer wear when the shops are crammed full of ski clothes, furry boots and woolly hats? We scoured Munich to find the best places for summer fashion in February.

Miss Brasil is the answer to all your holiday prayers—you can stock up on a lot of the things you need under one roof. The store opened last July, and has introduced a much-needed dose of color to closets across the city. As the name suggests, everything in the shop comes from Brazil, including the owner, Sonia Ferreira Stärker. She specializes in swimwear—bikinis and bathing suits—plus sports, fitness and leisure wear, but you will also find sandals, dresses, jeans, bags, jewelry and more. If you associate the words “Brazil” and “bikini” with a garment resembling a piece of string, fret not. Mere mortals will be relieved to know that Miss Brasil stocks a huge variety of shapes and sizes, so there is something for everyone. Perhaps you won’t find a present for granny in this store (although she would probably love the pretty bags), but you will find an Aladdin’s Cave of bright, beautiful and unique items. The designs are quirky, and many incorporate hand-beading, embroidery or shell, making them original without being over-the-top. This is the place to buy a gorgeous new bikini—the bold designs will get you noticed and you can rest safe in the knowledge that you will not bump into other women wearing the same one. To complement your new swimwear, why not buy some sexy sandals, a funky bag or a cool tunic dress to top off your beach look? Even if you’re not going on holiday just yet, Miss Brasil is certainly worth a visit for a burst of color that will brighten even the grayest winter day!

As a year-round fashion accessory, sunglasses are not hard to come by, even in the depths of winter. But if you’d rather spend your holiday fund on pina coladas than a pair of specs, here are a few options. If you are looking for something basic but trendy, check out accessory shops such as SIX at Kaufingerstrasse 13 or Bijou Brigitte on Marienplatz, where you can also buy bright, summery jewelry and accessories. If you prefer something a bit more upmarket, good second-hand stores often stock designer sunglasses for a fraction of their original price and also sell quirky, vintage models. Try Second Hand at Schellingstrasse 73 or Macy at Johannisplatz 20. <<<

Hot off the Shelves...
Thiersch 15 sells itself as a furniture, light and lifestyle store. The displays often stop innocent passers-by in their tracks, and outside opening hours people can be seen with their noses pressed against the window. Once you have seen the goodies they stock, including smaller gift ideas, you will understand why. Thierschstrasse 15, Tel. (089) 23 70 87 63, www.thiersch15.de

The Tumi Store is located in the Fünf Höfe shopping mall. The American company sells high-quality suitcases, travel bags, handbags and backpacks. Theatinerstrasse 44, Tel. (089) 25 54 06 99, www.tumi.com

Irresistable for kids young and old, Bärlebnis at Altheimer Eck is basically a teddy bear factory. Select your empty bear fur, fill it as fat as you like, choose its clothes and then create your bear’s voice, by recording a message onto a chip. If you can handle parting to part with it, why not send your little softy to friends back home—a cuddle from afar?

Designerei. This new store is a must for people who love design. From the greetings cards to the kids toys and novelty items, everything is beautifully designed and packaged. A treat for the eyes. Gärtnerplatz 1, Tel. (089) 20 20 99 55, www.team4-muc.de

For more grown-up treats, take a sneaky peek at Sündhaft. The coffee bar cum beauty cum adult store at Reichenbachstrasse 30 has just opened its online boudoir at www.suendhaft.com. From Japanese perfume oils and Savage Beauty cosmetics to white tangerine tea and even black leather bunnies, the selection of products on sale is certainly unusual. A good place to look for sinful Valentine’s Day gifts.

If you’d prefer to give the one you love something more conventional, Milch und Honig at Belgradstrasse 4 has a few suggestions. How about some True Rose perfume from Woods of Windsor (€ 24.80) or a pink leather heart-shaped keyring (€ 9.50)?
