November 2005

Did you know...?

Frankfurt may be renowned for its book fair—but Munich’s comes a close second. The annual event, which last year attracted 150,000 visitors, runs from November 18 until December 4. In the vast interiors of Gasteig, more than 300 publishing houses will present over 20,000 new publications, as well as their all-time best sellers. Innumerable lectures, readings and family events (involving the likes of Jostein Gaarder, author of Sophie’s World, and Lea Ackermann, advocate of women’s rights) will be held at the fair, which is open daily from 8 am to 11:30 pm. For detailed information on program and tickets, check www.muenchner-buecherschau.de.

Got a budding songster at home? The Gärtnerplatz Staatstheater’s children’s choir is looking for new members—particularly boys aged eight or nine. Rehearsals take place on Friday afternoons and applicants will be expected to take part in a light-hearted audition. Some musical knowledge is a must. For details, contact Frau Sarré at Tel. 20 24 11.

This month marks 20 years of Gasteig as the heart and soul of Munich’s art and culture scene, and it’s inviting you to come celebrate. Join the party on November 12, when Gasteig presents a multifaceted array of performances, readings and exhibitions. Highlights include music by the Munich Philharmonic, African and Indian dance, poetry readings, a book and CD market and arts activities for kids. The fun starts at 2 pm and admission is free. For a full list of what else is in store, visit www.gasteig.de. Aside from the birthday festivities, some strange sounds will be taking over the airwaves this month at Gasteig. Alternative concert series Klang Aktionen is back again this year, introducing Munich to some up-and-coming musicians, never-before-heard instruments and new trends in electronic music. Composer Josef Anton Riedl began the series back in 1960, and still aims to highlight the unknown, unusual and unexpected in music. “We want to do what the others here in Munich won’t dare do and we want to do it first,” Riedl says. Catch Klang Aktionen on November 15 and 17 in the Black Box, and on November 18 and 21 in the Carl-Orff-Saal. All performances start at 8 pm. Tickets are € 10, and are available by calling München Ticket, Tel. 54 81 81 81.
