April 2006

Sleek Chic

April is the month for minimalists. For starters, the Japanese company Muji opens its largest store in the world in the Fünf Höfe on April 6, featuring affordable, sleek, household objects. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the store, it’s the sort of place where addicts can wander around for hours, trying to think of a reason as to why they really must buy that little white plastic box… While the goodies on sale may not strike you as works of art, they are, in fact, great examples of contemporary design. Indeed, the company is among those to draw on the design talents of Munich’s very own Konstantin Grcic, whose works feature in a unique exhibition at the Haus der Kunst this month. Widely regarded as the world’s leading industrial designer, Grcic has also worked for the likes of Rosenthal, Nymphenburger Porzellan and Iittala. Go fuel those dreams of a sleek, clutter-free life at the exhibition, which runs until July 9 and is open daily from 10 am to 8 pm and until 10 pm on Thursdays.
