A list of some of the larger parties and events in Munich for the millennium

The millennium in munich. Perhaps there is a bigger party in New York, maybe there is a crazier party in Sydney or a more sophisticated one in Paris, but for Münchners and those visiting our city the possibilities are great. The big parties Kulturfest – Silvestermeile Ludwigsstraße: From Max-Josephs Platz over Odeonsplatz and up to the Siegestor, Ludwigsstraße will be transformed into one big party piazza for 24 hours. Some 200,000 people are expected to partake of the variety of attractions. On five stages, bands will play Jazz, Rock/Pop, Charts and traditional Bavarian Music. At the Odeonsplatz there will be an extra children’s program. Around 60 stands will be selling food and drinks with, of course, Glühwein to keep patrons warm throughout the night. 2000 Jahre Kunstpark Ost: Organizers claim this will be the biggest indoor New Year’s Eve party in Europe, boasting 30 venues to accommodate what is sure to be a younger set. Outside, light and laser shows help direct party-goers to the mecca of fun that KPO has become. Admission for both days (December 31, 1999 and January 1, 2000) is DM 87,80 and covers access to all areas. A free welcome drink is included. For information call: 50 00 29 28. Dinner theater Pomp Duck and Circumstance near the Wappenhalle in Riem: Its wacky shows and Peter Wodarz’s four star menus are known far beyond the city borders. For the millennium, the troupe will present a very special show. At 18:00, guests will be offered a selection of cocktails from the 1950s to the 1990s. At 20:00, the show, accompanied by a gourmet dinner, begins with performers from the Cirque de Soleil. At midnight, toast the new year with champagne and fireworks. For those who are still going strong come morning, a breakfast of Weißwürste will be served at 6:00. Price: DM 1,999 for two. Call 94 00 73 for reservations and information. Tiger Lilly Varieté and Five Decades of Rock Music: In the Olymp theater tent, at the Tollwood winter festival in Arnulfpark, the “Tiger Lillies” will entertain guests during a five-course dinner developed by Bavarian chef Alfons Schuhbeck. Other tents will host live music following the theme “Five Decades of Rock Music.” Doors open at 19:00. Entrance to the tents is just DM 77, dinner theater at Olymp will run you DM 285. For more information call: 38 38 50 24. Silvester Millenium Gala. The Deutsches Theater offers a seven-course menu and a performance of their long running musical Grease. At midnight there will be a fireworks display, after which guests are welcome to party in the rooms of the theater all night long. Tickets: DM 300 and DM 489. The event begins at 20:30. The price includes all parties, dinners and drinks. The highlight of the three days will be Mit dem Walzerkönig in das Jahr 2000 (With the waltz king in the year 2000) on New Year’s Eve. Marriot Hotel: It’s no secret that when Americans are feeling homesick they head for the Marriot’s sports bar Champions. New Year’s Eve should be no exception. Festivities include an American buffet, show and DJ at Champions, a big firework display as well as a raffle. All this for the very fair price of DM 69. Double rooms are offered for DM 199 per night. Millennium Concerts New Year’s eve concert at the Residenz: The Munich Bach soloists and the trumpet ensemble Läubin perform Bach, Mozart, Haydn and Handel in this romantic venue. Concert starts at 21:00. Tickets and information: 296 836. The Creation — Oratorio by Joseph Haydn. The Munich Chamber Orchestra and its conductor, Christoph Poppen perform a masterpiece of early classic music at the Prinzregententheater. For more information call (08106) 89 95 65. Light vision into the third millennium — Man Between Earth and the Cosmos. Classical music and laser show. The Munich Philharmonic Orchestra with conductor Gustav Kuhn will perform. The program is divided into three themes: “Vox Mundana” (Music of Earth) features the music of Darius Milhaud and Igor Strawinsky; “Vox humana ” (Music of Mankind) features works by Richard Wagner and Hector Berlioz; “Vox Coelestis” (Music of Cosmos) rounds out the program with the music of Richard Strauß and Gustav Holst.
