Japanese Temple Photography

Few photographers are granted access to the sacred temples of Japan. Perhaps because Ogawa Kôzô takes a spiritual view of his work—aiming to “capture the soul” and not just the form of his subjects—the Japanese government has long permitted him to work within Buddhist temples. An exhibition at the Staatliches Museum für Völkerkunde shows 60 of his photographs of “Buddhist Sculpture from Yamato.” Through close-up shots and unusual angles, Kôzô uncovers the master craftsmanship that lies behind the simplicity of the smooth wood and bronze forms. The exhibition is on display until January 28. <<<
