The Grand Hotel and Literature

Thomas Mann, Agatha Christie, Vladimir Nabokov and Marcel Proust: A group of authors spanning countries and centuries, they are united not just by their critical acclaim, but by their fascination with Grand Hotels. A new exhibition at the Literaturhaus will explore the importance of the luxury palaces to these and other authors from March 28 to June 17. First erected in the mid-19th century, ornate hotels like the Waldorf Astoria quickly became an important symbol and stage for conspicuous consumption. The exhibition will present photographs, relics, and pieces of text related to this peculiar milieu. In addition, special events at Munich’s own Grand Hotels will allow participants to experience the same mix of public and private that fascinated decades of authors.
