Car Sharing

Whether hoping to live green or as a result of constantly living in the red, more and more people are opting to live without owning a car. Munich’s amazing public transportation network makes it easy to live auto-free. Still, some situations all but demand the independence and convenience of automobile transportation. Moving day, shopping day, and weekend trips are much easier with control of the wheel. One of the city’s best kept transportation secrets—Statt Auto—keeps Münchner without cars mobile. The car-sharing service parks their fleet in several lots across the city, ready for use 24/7. Members pay a returnable € 500 deposit, € 7 per month, and fees for each trip based on time and distance driven. Other costs, however, are absorbed by the company: Each car comes with a company debit card to use for gas, and the company reimburses members for car wash trips, oil fill-ups and other expenses. Reciprocal agreements with companies in Berlin and other major cities allow members to borrow cars across Germany. To sign up, visit www.stattauto-muenchen.de.
