Poliakoff Retrospective

Paris was the center of the move toward abstract art in the years after World War II. At the vortex of that heady scene was Russian artist Serge Poliakoff. Out of the Fauvism of the 1930s, Poliakoff developed a form of abstract painting centered upon the richness of color. In cooperation with the Kunsthalle in Emden, the Kunsthalle Hypo-Kulturstiftung is now displaying a selection of 80 paintings, 40 gouache paintings, and 20 select graphic works by Poliakoff. The retrospective—organized with the help of Poliakoff’s son—is both a tribute to a master of abstract art, and a challenge to the figure-focused painters of recent years.
