Photography at the Deutsches Museum

With 55,000 square meters of exhibits, the Deutsches Museum is already one of the world’s largest. There’s always room, however, for something new to learn: A permanent exhibit on photography and film is their latest expansion. The 560 square meters of exhibition space showcase the development of photography and film technology from 1839 to today. In the center of the room, a 20-meter-long glass display features a chronology of technological developments in the field. Themed islands and interactive stations help visitors explore such areas as special effects or the use of lenses. In addition, a special temporary exhibition on “Atom Pictures” accompanies the permanent pieces. Extreme close-ups of these molecular building blocks are placed in dialogue with documentary photographs of Nagasaki and press images from the Miss Atomic Bomb beauty contest, held in the 1950s. In all, an important addition to Germany’s most significant science museum.
