Ski Season Openings

Mark you calendar: The first Saturday in December, the 1st, will be the start of the season for most of the Bavarian resorts within an hour of Munich. The opening of the Zugspitze is accompanied by several special events over the weekend, including free avalanche awareness courses, fitness tests and musical programs. Once you try all of that, there is a new mountaintop restaurant, the Gletschergarten, which offers something old—a great alpine view—and something new—Asian cuisine served from an open display kitchen. Down in the valley, the Garmisch-Partenkirchen resort area has new snow-making facilities on the Hausberg slopes and the Tröglift. Close to the Hausberg gondola station, younger skiers will find a new “Kinderland” area and the debut of a special children’s tow. If a wave of white powder hits before December 1, the entire Zugspitze area is immediately ready and running. Also kicking off the season on December 1st are: Spitzingsee, Brauneck/Lenggries, Wallberg, Sudelfeld and Wendelstein. A tip for all those who can afford to avoid weekend-skiing: In most resorts Wednesday is Ladies Day with children’s ticket prices for all women. <<<
