Munich's St. Patrick’s Day parade is considered to be the largest Patty celebration in Europe, outside Dublin, of course

Since its inception into Munich culture five years ago, the St. Patrick’s Day parade has attracted such a large following that it is considered to be the largest Patty celebration in Europe, outside Dublin, of course. In honor of that fact, event organizers have arranged a visit by a prominent (as of MF press time undisclosed) Irish politician for the Sunday, March 5, festivities. Those who wish to join the march from Münchner Freiheit to Odeonsplatz — being of Irish heritage not a prerequisite — should gather at the procession’s start at noon. Those who wish to forgo the stroll — after all, you might just get stuck behind the horses — can begin partying at Odeonsplatz at 10:00, where food and beverage vendors, as well as a host of worthy-cause booths await. This year’s entertainment program includes Scottish pipe bands, Irish dance groups, Bavarian Schuhplattler, American square dancers and local Irish bands Ballycotton, the Munich Ceili Band and Angaheym. The proceedings will once again be led by Munich Mayor Christian Ude. As in the past, fresh pints of Guinness, green duds and shamrock-drawing face painters will highlight the day of Irish delight, which will take place rain or shine. <<< lv
