On the Move

Dance workshops

Munich’s small but lively contemporary dance scene gets an international boost each summer when the Tanzwerkstatt Europa comes to town. Now in its tenth year, the event will run from July 27 to August 6. In workshops, nearly all of which are conducted in English, amateur and professional dancers can learn from some of the most celebrated figures in contemporary dance in Europe. The range is wide, from release technique, emphasizing body awareness and fluidity of movement, to physical dance — an energetic mix of dance, gymnastics and sports. Among the eleven teachers are two Munich locals: Katja Wachter, director of the Selfish Shellfish dance company, and Andreas Abele, who leads the GROUP 95 dance troupe. Performances will feature seven works by some of the most important conceptual artists in dance today. Britain’s Rosemary Butcher Company will perform “Scan,” which combines movement, film, light and sound to explore the internal and external life of the body. In the duet “A bras le corps,” the performing space comes to resemble a boxing ring as French dancers Boris Charmatz and Dimitri Chamblas move with and against each other. German choreographer Felix Ruckert will re-create his improvisational piece “Ring.” Capping the Tanzwerkstatt will be a presentation at the Muffathalle by workshop participants.
