December 2000

More Than Fair

Winter Tollwood festival

Winter in Germany is always associated with the aroma of steaming Glühwein and the taste of gingery Lebkuchen. Every December, Munich’s air is also filled with the smells of spices from all over the world. The Tollwood Winter Festival, having moved this year from the more distant location at the Arnulf Park to the centrally located Theresienwiese, will present a mixture of performances, art, literature and food during the last month of the year 2000. A tent city covering one tenth of the Theresienwiese area will be home to numerous multicultural highlights. Under the title “fatal deluxe,” the festival will kick off with a crossover performance of varieté, artistic and classical music. In addition, a “menu deluxe” is planned, whereby a chef from a different part of the world will be featured each week. From December 19 to 23, for example, the “authentic Californian” Ralf Marhenke, former chef at “Stars” in San Francisco, will demonstrate his cooking skills. No doubt another highlight will be the Ship of Wishes, a ten-meter-long boat built out of roots and rocks by Austrian artist Ludwig Franz. Tollwood-goers are invited to write their wishes on the boat’s large sail. While enjoying the festival and catching the breeze of global culture at Tollwood, visitors will be basking in the bright lights created by the Australian light designer Craig Walsh. The Tollwood Festival will run from November 30 to its program-packed New Year’s Eve party. For details, call the Info and Ticketline at (0700) 38 38 50 24 or visit www.tollwood.de. <<< KA
