Scloss Elmau presents the Jazzclassica Festival '99
The hills are alive Elmau castle, located 100 km south of Munich, was built for a wealthy patron of the arts in 1916 to serve as a salon for artists and musicians. While Schloss Elmau’s modern incarnation might seem a mere commercial facility — a 150-room hotel nestled in the alpine foothills near Garmisch-Partenkirchen — it is in fact still one of the largest cultural centers in Germany, hosting as many concerts yearly as it has rooms. From July 16 through August 28, the Schloss Elmau’s postcard-perfect setting will form the backdrop for the Jazzclassica Festival ’99. This year’s theme is “Stars of the German Jazz Scene.” Performers include: Barbara Dennerlein, who proves that good music can come from a Hammond organ; saxophonist Charlie Mariano, the 75-year-old Boston bebop artist and Cologne transplant; and the Coco Schumann Quartet. Guitarist Schumann, detained by the Nazis during World War II, played in the propaganda-combo Ghetto Swingers at the Theresienstadt concentration camp. Also slated for the month of July at Schloss Elmau are several symposiums, conducted in English, including topics such as “Wagner’s Role in the Third Reich,” and a three-part discussion of Jewish resistance and the Holocaust.
