Taking the Long View

Usually held in autumn, the popular Lange Nacht der Münchner Museen this year takes place on Saturday, July 12. From 7 pm to 2 am more than 70 museums, galleries and churches will participate in this fifth annual cultural event. The date change was made to offer various open-air attractions on terraces and in gardens during what is hoped to be a warm, dry summer night. In addition to permanent collections and current exhibitions, many locations offer special events this evening. Relive ancient Greek culture at the Museum für Abgüsse klassischer Bildwerke, enjoy modern art and spectacular architecture at the recently opened modern art museum Pinakothek der Moderne or visit the Hotel Bayerischer Hof, where a big party with live music and DJs is planned. Last year more than 40,000 people joined the all-night festivities, which are expected to attract even more participants this year (it is a great way for tourists to see most of Munich’s museums and galleries all in one fell swoop). Many museums will be offering special programs for children from 2 pm to 6 pm. A shuttle bus service (included in the ticket price) is scheduled to begin at 7 pm on Odeonsplatz and will cover four museum tours. Tickets cost € 15 for adults and can be purchased at participating locations. For more information and the evening’s program, visit www.die-lange-nacht.de.
