Founding Munich

The weekend of June 19 to 20 marks the 846th birthday of Munich, which was founded by Henry the Lion, Duke of Bavaria, in 1158. Munich owes its origin to Henry’s keen business acumen, as he foresaw the economic prosperity and urban development that would result from the channeling of the salt trade over a new bridge located in Munich. Henry’s foresight turned out to be correct, as Munich has become one of Germany’s most prosperous cities. Mayor Christian Ude will kick off the celebrations honoring our magnificent city on Saturday June 19 at 11 am on Marienplatz with an opening address and a traditional gun salute. From then on, stalls in the pedestrian zone from Marienplatz to Odeonsplatz will be open for the weekend and will sell traditional Bavarian goods and refreshments. Between Odeonsplatz and the Residenz there will be exhibitions by local craftsmen and hobby artists whose one-of-a-kind work will be for sale. Festivities will be held: Saturday, June 19, 10 am–11 pm and Sunday, June 20, 11 am–10 pm. See www.muenchen-tourist.de.
