When the former director of the Haus der Kunst, Chris Dercon, announced his leaving to take over the Tate Modern London, there was no doubt that his successor would have to face the challenge of keeping the world-class standards Dercon established in Munich. At the same time, the future curator was required to have the potential of giving the exhibition hall a new artistic orientation. Thus, the appointment of Okwui Enwezor earlier this year was deemed a small sensation. Indeed, Enwezor seems to be the perfect follow-up!

His art connoisseurship not only covers the European and American art market, but is complemented with his expertise in contemporary art from Asia, Africa and South America. Also, Enwezor himself stands for international collaboration like few of his colleagues. Born in Nigeria in 1963, Enwezor studied political science in New York and made himself a name as a promoter of African art. Recent stops of his impressive career include the Johannesburg Biennial, the documenta 11 and the Gwangju Biennial South Korea. For the start of his Munich era, Enwezor has proclaimed to take an international approach. However, "not nationalities but rather ideas" will play a decisive role in his programming.
