Ironworks and Mines

Through September 11:
Photographer couple, Bernd and Hilla Becher, were among the first to portray the industrial landscapes of the 20th century.

Once the pulsating heart of the industrial revolution, smokestack industries complexes have become historical sites today. Long before the aesthetic and historical relevance of these buildings were acknowledged by a broader public, though, the Bechers started their series of panoramic photographs at the center of which stand ironworks and coalmines. Many of the portrayed sites have already been torn down, a few, however, are now under monument protection, also thanks to the Bechers. Most of the photos on show at the Munich City Museum have been taken in Germany's main industrial region—the Ruhr area. But the exhibition will also be complemented by pictures taken in the USA, Great Britain and France to illuminate the transnational architecture of the industrial era.
