The many well-preserved historic buildings in Munich sometimes give the city an air of noble stability. While it may seem that the city’s glorious appearance has not changed much in recent decades, some spots in the city center would be unrecognizable to city residents from just a generation ago. One focal point of this transformation is located at Theresienhöhe, behind the Bavaria statue on Theresienwiese.
Over the last hundred years, architectural developments and a dynamic local industry have created a vibrant atmosphere that characterizes the district to this day.

The first real growth in the area began at the end of the 19th century, when city officials and local entrepreneurs decided to promote their business ventures beyond Bavarian borders. Together, they organized industrial exhibitions in provisional buildings on the so-called "Coal Island" near Isartor.
