American / Continental Cohen’s 280 95 45, Theresienstr. 31 (U2 Theresienstr., Bus 53). Open daily 12:30-close. Closed Saturdays. Cohen’s features the robust textures of the Eastern European kitchen, the spicy flavors of the Middle East and the homey taste of a New York bagel and lox. A large menu with a substantial assortment of appetizers, and entrées that vary daily. E

Edison & Co. 13 03 93 93, Schulstr. 28 (U1 Rotkreuzplatz). Daily10-1. Famous inventors and their inventions make up the décor. If you can’t decide on a main dish, choose one of Parson’s Platters with a mix of appetizers, such as chicken wings and potato skins. M

K.U.K: MONARCHIE 201 56 71, Reichenbachstr. 22 (U1/2 Fraunhoferstr.). Daily12-14, 17-1. Named for the Kaiserlich-Königliche Monarchie Austria-Hungary that World War ! ended. So guess what culinary regions are covered? Austrian, Hungarian, Czech and Bohemian dishes are delicious. M

New York Cafe 38 88 98 08, Leopoldstr. 43 (U3/6 Münchner Freiheit). Mon.-Fri. 7-1, Sat. 8-1, Sun. 9-24. American coffee-drinking experience here in Munich. A great bagel menu along with muffins and brownies. Additional café at Schellingstr. 24, Tel. 28 99 66 30 (U3/6 Universität). IN Bavarian/german Altes Hackerhaus 260 50 26, Sendlinger Str. 14 (U3/6 Sendlinger Tor). Daily 9-23:30. Centrally located, charming Lokal with good Weissbier and daily menu. M

Bratwurstherzl 29 51 13, Dreifaltigkeitsplatz 1 (U & S Marienplatz). Daily 10-23 (meals until 21:30, grill until 22:30) closed Sun. and holidays. Excellent Bavarian cuisine at this small eatery hidden in the Viktualienmarkt.. Specialties include Nuremburger sausages made on site and Hacker-Pschorr beer served from a wooden barrel, charming interior and menu in English, mostly English-speaking staff. IN-M

Georgenhof 39 31 01, Friedrichstr. 1, corner of Georgenstr. (U3/6 Giselastr.). Daily 12-1. Fine Bavarian cuisine in a rustic atmosphere. Fresh fish, game or meat is prepared over a charcoal grill in the middle of the restaurant so guests can watch the cooks at work. The grilled rabbit is an excellent choice for dinner, or stop in and quench your thirst in the beer garden. Menu changes daily. M E Beer gardens Augustiner Keller 59 43 93, Arnulfstr. 52 (S Hackerbrücke). Daily 10-1, food until 22. Centrally located a mere ten minutes’ walk from the Hauptbahnhof. Good food and frequent special events. Seating in the self-service area is recommended, as some waiters tend to be surly. M

Chinesischer Turm 383 87 30, in the Englischer Garten. (Bus 54, 154; Tram 17). Daily 10-23. The “original” Munich beer garden. Good people watching, live oompah music and traditional Bavarian refreshments.M

Hirschgarten 17 25 91 Hirschgarten 1 (All S Bahns to Laim) Bavaria’s largest beer garden with seating for more than 3,000 patrons. Large deer pen flanks this Augustiner Edelstoff-serving beer oasis. Huge playgrounds surround the gastronomic area. Extensive menu than most beer gardens, grilling area for parties and picnics. M

Kugler Alm 613 16 06, Linienstr. 91, Deisenhofen (S2 Deisenhofen). The perfect place to stop for a beer and Schmalznudel after a bike tour through the Perlacher Forst. One of the best in the south of Munich. M

Seehaus 381 613-16, in the Englischer Garten (U3/6 Münchner Freiheit). Mon.-Fri. 11-24, Sat. & Sun. 10-24. Fabulous view across the park’s tiny lake. Self- and full-service tables. Fills up quick any day, any time. M expensive but worth it Böttner 22 12 10, Theatinerstr. 8 (S & U Marienplatz). Mon.-Fri. 11:30-22:30, Sat. 12-15. Fine dining in Munich’s bustling city center. Ideal for a special break from shopping, as the restaurant’s best and busiest time is the lunch hour. E

Primo 470 62 77, Prinzregentenplatz 23 (U4/5 Prinzregentenplatz). Mon.-Fri. 12-14:30, 19-23; Sat. & Sun. 18-23. Chic, ground-floor ristorante serving excellent modern Italian cuisine. Perfect place to start the evening before a visit to the Prinzregententheater. Delicious truffle dishes. E

Tantris 36 20 61, Johann-Fichte-Str. 7 (U6 Diet-lindenstr.). Tues.-Sat. 12-15, 18:30-1(Sun,Mon and holidays closed). Elegant atmosphere and well-to-do clientele, including many local celebrities. Michelin-rated German cooking.Voted among Munich’s ten finest restaurants for 2000 by the respected Marcelino’s restaurant guide. E
